Boutenac, a Corbières ‘cru’

The history of Cru Boutenac as a wine region is closely connected to that of the Corbières. In 1985, AOC/AOP Corbières was officially recognised by the National Institute for Appellations of Origin (INAO). Its footprint is extensive, running from the outskirts of Carcasonne down to the coast, and from the upper Corbières to the terraces of Lézignan. Here, a mosaic of vineyard sites emerged, and in particular that of Boutenac.

In 1993, INAO experts felt that wines from the Boutenac region “displayed a level of quality across-the-board that clearly differentiated them from other parts of the Corbières”. A group of winegrowers came together, heralding the start of a long process of recognition that would culminate in the awarding of AOC/PDO Corbières-Boutenac in 2005, followed by that of AOC/PDO Boutenac in 2024.
